What does it cost?

Georgia State is dedicated to providing affordable and accessible programs for all prospective students because we value the investment each student makes in their education. We understand that the path to a student’s future shouldn’t be blocked due to finances and we pride ourselves on offering financial assistance and scholarships that can support students through their education.

How long will it take?

After completing all core curriculum and pre-psychology major requirements (60 hours), the degree requires the completion of an additional 60 credit hours. A student can expect to complete the degree in two years by taking 15 credit hours per semester.*

*Additional coursework may be required to meet prerequisites. Students are required to meet major eligibility requirements to pursue major.

All required classes to earn a degree can be completed online.

Students may enter the program in fall, spring or summer semester.

Political science is the study of “who gets what, when, and how” in the distribution of goods and values in society and in groups.

Political scientists examine the forces that drive such decisions, including political parties and voters, public opinion, interest groups, bureaucracies and administrative behavior, public law, international relations, international law and organizations, national security, intergovernmental relations, political behavior, political philosophy, comparative politics, public policy and conflict.

Georgia State University’s online bachelor’s degree completion program in political science offers two options: the general program in political science and a concentration in pre-law. These programs allow you to learn about American politics and government, comparative politics, international politics and political theory, all while preparing you for success in graduate school, law school and beyond. Please note that the international affairs concentration is not currently available as a fully online program.

The online degree program emphasizes:

  • Active Learning
    Political science classes allow students to practice a wide variety of skills through debates, simulations and other active learning activities.
  • Career Competencies
    Students will develop skills with direct relevance to success in law school, graduate school and the workplace. Written assignments develop problem-solving skills as well as analytical skills, with a focus on research, data analysis, and critical thinking. Online group projects enhance verbal and written communication skills and sharpen students’ ability to work in teams. Over the course of the program, students identify and evaluate effective leadership, and build a strong work ethic. In many courses, students will document these competencies through archiving textual and video evidence in e-portfolios.
  • Connections
    Online students will have opportunities for community building through connections to groups and activities designed for Georgia State political science students.

Applicants must have the equivalent of an associate degree or completed 60 hours of coursework.

This program is open to Re-entry/Readmit, Transfer and Transition students only.

Re-entry/Re-admit Students
If you’re a former Georgia State student who hasn’t registered for courses for the last three semesters, apply as a re-entry student. During the application process, you will first select your major, and then you will be able to indicate that you are interested in taking classes online. For your campus option, please select Atlanta Online.

Transfer Students
If you’re already in college but need a change, transferring to Georgia State can provide you with the opportunities you need to succeed — in school and after graduation. During the application process, you will first select your major, and then you will be able to indicate that you are interested in taking classes online. For your campus option, please select Atlanta Online.

Transition Students
If you’re enrolled in an associate degree pathway at Georgia State’s Perimeter College, we make it easy for you to move on to your bachelor’s degree. Seamlessly transition to the Atlanta Campus by submitting a Transition Application. During the application process, you will first select your major, and then you will be able to indicate that you are interested in taking classes online. For your campus option, please select Atlanta Online.

Apply as a Transition Student

After students fulfill the lower-division psychology major eligibility requirements, students will take upper-division Poltiical Science coursework in various areas.

  • The pre-law concentration in political science includes 5 required political science courses related to law and courts and political science methodology.
  • To complete the degree, students will take an additional 5 political science courses which will result in students covering at least three broad areas of political science.
