In response to the growing number of Georgia schools with Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs, the College of Education & Human Development’s Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education offers a fully online endorsement in Dual Language Immersion. A valuable asset in a world of global connections, bilingualism is an advantage that parents want for their children regardless of their native tongue.

This online endorsement program is designed to prepare teachers like you to meet this need, to be sensitive and responsive to the needs of dual language immersion learners' and to be advocates for DLI in a variety of educational settings. Coursework is designed to address effective learning environments for bilingual students and methods and materials for engaging DLI students in challenging educational experiences.

The program develops highly prepared teachers who understand DLI education and are teacher-leaders in establishing learner-centered classrooms consistent with the standards of the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium. It is open to students who are enrolled in a foreign language certification program at Georgia State University and to current educators who hold a Level 4 or higher induction or professional foreign language education certificate from the state of Georgia. The endorsement qualifies successful candidates to teach in kindergarten through fifth-grade dual immersion classrooms.

Credits earned in this program can be applied to the online Master of Education in Elementary Education with a concentration in Dual Language Education.

Career Outcomes

This endorsement will prepare candidates for P-5 Dual Immersion classrooms. Candidates will learn about current research, curricula and content-area teaching methods applicable to Dual Language settings. They will acquire knowledge of child development and elementary content standards and learn how to apply this knowledge in Dual Immersion classrooms.

Program Details

When applying to the Dual Language Immersion Early Childhood Education Endorsement, you will need to submit several documents for review:

  • Online Application

  • Proof that you have an active state teacher certificate or license in Foreign Language Education or are currently enrolled in the Foreign Language Education certification program at Georgia State
  • Official Transcript: minimum 2.5 undergraduate GPA or a master’s degree required for admission consideration
  • Submission of transcripts from all colleges/universities attended

Please Note:
Interviews will be conducted by department faculty — you will be notified if you are selected for an interview.

The program consists of four online content courses and a field placement course. The content courses are taught during the summer or evenings on campus during the fall and spring semesters. Classes are sequenced so that you can complete the endorsement in one year.

The field placement course, ECE 7740, requires an internship in an elementary dual immersion classroom with observation and feedback by a university instructor. Students should use their own classrooms for this course. If you are not teaching in a DLI elementary classroom at the time of the field placement course, a classroom will be located for you.

Successful completion of the five endorsement courses along with a valid level four (4) or higher renewable professional certificate in a foreign language field and a score of Professional level on the GACE content assessment for Early Childhood Education qualifies the student for the Dual Immersion Early Childhood Education Endorsement.
